Can Dogs Eat Italian Sausage?

Possibly not. When Italian sausage contains seasonings like onion powder or garlic powder, it can be harmful to your dog. These ingredients are toxic and can lead to anemia. Additionally, spicy seasonings such as red pepper can upset your dog’s digestive system.

Even if you find Italian sausage that doesn’t include these seasonings, it’s still high in fat and not recommended as a protein source for your dog.

Symptoms to Watch For

If your dog has ingested sausage containing onion or garlic powder, be on the lookout for these symptoms of anemia:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dark colored urine
  • Lethargy or weakness
